Christianity
is sometimes referred to as “a religion of second chances.” Think of the
picture Paul gives of baptism in Romans 6. Baptism is a picture of the death of
Christ. As Christ died, was buried, and resurrected from the dead on the third
day, the Christian faces the same (v. 4). He dies to sin, is buried in the
waters of baptism, and is brought to live a new life. The old man of sin dies
on the day and this individual lives a live which does his best not to commit the
old practices of sin (v. 5-11). He is essentially “given a second chance.” That
is a truth which is sometimes hard to remember. It may be the fact that this is
forgotten in our own lives. We are, at times, our own worst enemies. One can be
such a critic of his own actions that he hurts himself spiritually and degrades
the abilities he has. By doing such, he hurts the good which he can do for the
kingdom. Why? That person believes himself unworthy of a “second chance.” What
happens if we find ourselves in such a position? It is important in these
instances that we turn to a Biblical person who can teach us much good. What
Bible person would be the best example of one who needed a “second chance”?
While there are many who would fit bill, it would likely be of some good to
study the example of the apostle Peter.
Join us as we study more about him.
