Fellowhelper to the Truth
There are many individuals who are spoken of as
fellowhelpers to the truth (Phil. 4:3;
Phm 1:1). These individuals are known for their liberality, hospitality,
and good works. “Beloved, thou doest
faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; Which have
borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on
their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: Because that for his
name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles” (3 Jn 1:5-7). John speaks of Gaius being
the type of person who would help those who are in need. He spoke of many
travelling missionaries and the hospitality which Gaius showed them. These are
not the missionaries of today. These were individuals who went forth from place
to place with no guarantee of a place to stay (hotel, home, or otherwise). No
knowledge if they would have to sleep out in the elements. If one of these
missionaries was in the area where Gaius was located, they had a place to stay.
He did this for brethren who knew and those he did not know personally. He
faithfully offered the hand of hospitality. John commended this type of heart.
He even mentions many (v. 6) who were currently planning a trip. John told
Gaius that he would do well to continue in kindness.
Is This My
Heart?
“We therefore
ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth” (3 John 1:8). To receive or welcome mean
“to receive into one’s own home.” The word “ought” shows the Christian’s
responsibility in this.
Is this the heart I possess? Do I have a heart which will
be faithful to God’s word and be hospitable to those who need it? Do I have a
different heart?
